As a fan of Claudia Shear I couldn’t be more happy. In 1995 I first became aware of her talents when PBS aired her one-woman Off Broadway show BLOWN SIDEWAYS THROUGH LIFE. A copy on VHS gave many years of laughs and tears listening to Shear’s tale of being unable to keep a job. Shear’s play was a relatable and humorous tale to anyone out there just trying to get by. Soon after she had a big success with her play about Mae West, DIRTY BLONDE. She and the play were nominated for a Tony Award. A few years ago I read she appeared in NYC in a new play RESTORATION that she also wrote and starred about an art restorer working on Michelangelo’s David. It never made it to Los Angeles which is not a slight; so many new plays never make it to Los Angeles. Just recently I was thinking about Shear and hoped she had something in the works.
The good news is that today it was announced that Shear is writing an upcoming television series VOICE OF THE CITY for NBC which is being billed as a New York City period musical drama set in the 1890’s. Joining playwright Shear are Off Broadway musical comedy pros Benj Pasek and Justin Paul whose adaption of the film DOGFIGHT into a musical is almost text book with one of the best new scores of the last ten years.
Glad to know you’re still out there Claudia Shear!
